Thanks, Steve, for the "hints". I found a file called 'root' in
/var/spool/cron. I don't know how it got there, but it appeared to be the
same as the /etc/crontab file. Weird...
Anyway, once I deleted the 'root' file all was golden, and crond continues
to run w/o any problems.
