Are you sure the font file are exactly the same? It looks like the Severn
version has some preliminary hinting for some letters.
If they are exactly the same, then it's freetype's fault. It may be trying to
improvise some sort of hinting. The freetype people are developing ways
around having a bytecode interpreter, which may or may not produce good
results.
