Interestingly, if I wait a whole minute or so, the splash screen does
actually seem to go away by itself.  I guess I was just being impatient.
:o)

I might have been confused by the fact that clicking on it made it go
away.  I didn't realise that was normal behaviour even while it was still
starting up services...
