open file dialog boxes messed up

When I try to open a file in gedit, I can't click through 
folders. That is, if I open in my home directory, I can't 
click to a lower directory to show files. The file dialog 
just sticks.

I can select a directory and "open" it, get an error 
message, and then the dialog box is reset to the new directory.

Oddly, the same thing is in file save boxes in firefox, and 
file open boxes in kate.

Anybody else see this?
