cannot login back to gnome

Dear all,
   Yesterday, I was showing off Fedora Core 5 Test 2 +
some updates to a colleague.  I logged off gnome and
logged in to KDE and then logged out and tried back to
get to gnome.  The system did not respond.  I can only
log on to gnome as root.  I want to have both gnome
and kde.  Please advice.
