Yes :-(
On a machine that is working fine with 1806smp, I installed 1806up,
rebooted into it and it failed the same way with "ata1 is slow to
respond" etc
I've just extracted the contents of my 1806 smp/up initrd files
they each have the set of files (i.e. count and name wise)
executables in /bin are identical, obviously the modules in /lib are
different, the contents of the init are identical
Unusual to see an issue where _not_ running smp tickles a problem
