I noticed a new rescue.iso from 2006-01-06 and tried it, unfortunately 
it crashes even earlier in the process with bad magic number in 
anaconda_log.pyc

I also tried today's i386 boot.iso and PXE vmlinuz which both give the 
same error, so it seems a general anaconda issue, rather than rescue CD 
specific. I've logged it in bugzilla #177114
