With Vera Serif broken (not supporting italics), I don't think it's

+1. It's unfortunate that if a user tries to change a password and if
the user doesn't get an appropriate password, it just doesn't change it.
A password generator will help, and userpasswd for instance can have a
new button that allows you to generate passwords.
