Aside from the stuff Owen suggested, are you perhaps loading certain
plugins that cause the slow down, or loading a very large file?  You
might try experimenting with the plugins especially to see if one of
them is causing it.  I only have the spell checker enabled and gedit
loaded within 1s cold.
