A real 1280*960 17" screen is 100dpi (you can do the math if you want).
So horizontal: 1280/13.58 = 94.25 dpi vertical: 1024/10.19 = 100.49 dpi
The reason windows is stuck at 96dpi is lots of first-gen 17" makers cheated and their products were either a bit smaller or could not fill all the glass space (you were stuck with a black band around the picture)
At 100dpi AA looks good in all reasonable sizes (I'm not talking about the people that burn their eyes on < 10pt fonts)
