we ran into the same problem for PTXdist. The problem is not the chown
but the chownat system calls.
Debian bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=402688 has a
patch
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=402688;msg=10;filename=froot_1_5_10-atfuncs.patch;att=1 that works for fakeroot 2.5.10.
