Thanks!  Upgrading e2fsprogs did the trick.  Your trick wouldn't have
helped me much without the extra information you provided since the
debug output mentions a bunch of libraries it searches through but of
course doesn't find the function and wouldn't narrow things down for me
much.  Without your assistance I suspect it would have taken me some
time to find out that this was related to ext2 libs. ;)
