When I compile a new kernel, I usually just use grubby to modify
/etc/grub.conf -

KERNEL=2.4.26
grubby --add-kernel=/boot/bzImage-$KERNEL \
--initrd=/boot/initrd-$KERNEL.img --title="Linux $KERNEL" \
--copy-default --make-default

(I hope the lines don't get wrapped too bad, but I put \ in there just
to be clear that it's all supposed to be one line.)
