Firefox install on FC2

It's been a while since I've worked on a RH system, so
please bear with me. I downloaded the Firefox 0.93
installer into /root, untared/ungziped it, and ran
firefox_installer, which created a
/root/firefox_installer directory with the firefox
executable in it. I'd like to be able to kick off
firefox by just typing "firefox" at a command prompt
without having to be in the /root directory.
So my first attempt was to go to /usr/bin and create a
"firefox" link to /root/firefox_installer/firefox.
That works fine, but it ties up terminal session
(foreground) when I do it.
My ultimate goal is to create a Firefox icon app on
the XFCE desktop or taskbar - I created an app link on
the taskbar but get a permissions error when I try to
kick off firefox from there.
I'm sure I'm doing a lot of things wrong here - please
enlighten me. How _should_ this be done? I'm sure
/root is not the right place to unpack the tarball,
right?
TIA.
Hardy Merrill
