If you're having problems with mplayer, you might try the following
steps:

edit /etc/sysconfig/prelink and change PRELINK_OPTS to "-mR --no-exec-
shield"

touch /var/lib/misc/prelink.force

run /etc/cron.daily/prelink (this will take a while)

I've done this, but haven't tried out some of the wmvs that crash (DMO
usually).
