Well, then deleting ~/.kde wont do anything! I don't know where gnome
keeps its settings, but see if there is a ~/.gnome directory. There
will not be any need to reinstall.
I probably shouldn't have suggested that so fast, though. Doing so
will return Gnome to it's default state- all your settings will be
lost. You could also rename the directory, say, to ~/.gnome-backup so
that you could recover individual files if need be.
Looking through the archives, I found another user who accidentally
removed the gnome taskbar. Yep, he nuked the settings and started
over, like I did:
