FWIW, yum knows about packages:
$ yum info "*smp*"
The "*"s tell yum to print everything with "smp" in the package name. If
that doesn't work (for something else, it works for "smp"):
$ yum search smp
will look for any package with "smp" in the package description and several
other places.
Sometimes the apropos command is useful, but not this time.
