when esd or alsa has taken sound device while mplayer use oss as default ao
put ao=alsa in config files in $HOME/.mplayer may help

Yes my .mplayer/config is set for "ao=alsa" and similar for "ao=oss" no sound,looks as if I'll need to test others but I think it's to do with /dev/* not releasing the driver or something.
