I'm subscribed to this list but messages are turned off thus I didn't see this thread. I was having problems with audacity, arecord, etc on my system and bumped into the thread via google. (I'm trying to convert my old cassette tapes to something a little bit more modern.)
After fooling around with alsamixer I was able to make things work. I was getting the "pcm_read: read error: Input/output error" until I turned the proper input on to my ac97/via8235/realtek ALC650E sound integrated on my ASUS mobo. There's way too many (needed) settings on the mixer and one can get things not working very easily.
I'm on 2.6.10-1.770_FC3, thus obviously FC3. I have a lot of alsa stuff from the ATrpms repo, and the combined RF (dag) repo installed, e.g.:
alsa-driver-1.0.8-36.rhfc3.at.i386.rpm
alsa-kmdl-2.6.10-1.770_FC3-1.0.8-36.rhfc3.at.i686.rpm
alsa-lib-1.0.8-18.rhfc3.at.i386.rpm
alsa-lib-devel-1.0.8-18.rhfc3.at.i386.rpm
alsa-utils-1.0.8-12.rhfc3.at.i386.rpm
audacity-1.2.3-2.1.fc3.rf.i386.rpm
