OK heres what I did :

Installed : hplip-0.9.4-1.1.i686.rpm
            hpijs-0.9.4-1.1.i686.rpm
            libsane-hpaio-0.9.4-1.1.i686.rpm

Hand built from src.rpm but the i386 are in 'updates-testing'

Run # /etc/init.d/hplip
    # /etc/init.d/cups

Then for good measure 'ldconfig'
Switch on the PSC,boot the Gimp >File>Acquire - there's the scan page ..
