Hi Ted,
 Here's my 2c hope it helps.

Your bios will be set to boot a particular drive, usually HDA in this case.
Windows came up because it hit this drive and the boot strap/sector was 
still Windows, so away it went.

Obviously Linux installed grub somewhere on HDB.

My recommendation is that you create the following partitions for linux
/boot ~ 1GB in size (disk is cheap)
/   (big size), some people like to split /home out, you can if you 
want, but I don't bother anymore
swap ~ same size of slightly larger than main memory, so you can use 
suspend to disc/standy

then have grub configured to boot sector of HDB

Change your BIOS to boot from HDB, and configure Grub to add the Windows 
partition, which should be hd0,0

In the event of a catastrophic disk failure or weirdness you can always 
change the bios back to HDA...
