Hmm... if it is not pulling down the SMP kernel, try to force the issue.
It may be that up2date is not convinced that it needs to grab it:
0. up2date -uf
...double check that this did not pull down kernel-smp...
1. up2date -f kernel-smp
2. reboot and test that new kernel
Here's an example of me doing it (minus the up2date -uf):

[root rhn-taw root]# up2date -f kernel-smp
