I bit the bullet and went in to the school the following day. I discovered
that rhnsd was not configured to go through the proxy, but running "up2date
--configure" fixed the problem. So there are definitely *two* steps to
configuring RHN to work through a proxy.

up2date's postinstall scriptlet does a chkconfig --add rhnsd. I _believe_
this also turns the service on, I'll have to double-check thuugh.

No need - I can save you the effort! - rhnsd *is* enabled by default.
