BINGO! You just found a bug.

NOTE TO ALL: this is NOT a bug in the 8.0 up2date.

up2date sucks in the settings from rhn_register only when you run the
client itself. This is how it works:
rhn_register --configure
...you configure and register...
up2date
...up2date sucks in rhn_register settings and then updates the box...

This is what you did:
rhn_register --configure
...you configure and register...
...and then you just left it to allow rhnsd to do its thing.

Skipping the first run of up2date failed to pull in the settings from
rhn_register. Subtle bug. Most people don't go through a HTTP proxy, and
most people run up2date at least once, so it has gone unnoticed as far
as I can tell.

This is NOT a problem for the Red Hat Linux v8.0 client because
rhn_register and up2date were merged.
