Don't know why it's different now, but it's working
for me again. The strange thing is this is all
scripted, and I haven't messed with the scripts.
Hm . . .
I do have RHN subscriptions for a number of servers,
but that has never (to my knowledge) influenced access
to the updates ftp server. You are absolutely correct
about the access and bandwidth limitations when
attempting to connect to RHN for updating under a demo
account. I have seen this myself, and it did not
matter whether the rpms were being downloaded or
pulled off a CD or whatever. Traditionally, the
ftp updates site has been open for anyone anywhere.
After all, that is where we got updates before RHN existed.
