Re: [rhn-users] Updates server

I am trying to do the same thing (download to a server, burn CD and update other severs).
If I download from updates.rdhat.com, what is the command to update the other servers?
Those updates are src.rpm. I don't use X, only the command line.
I use RedHat 6.2. I update the rpm package manager first and rebuild the rpm data base.
Then I use the following: # rpm -Uvh --freshen *.rpm
I use the --freshen so as to update only the packages that are already installed.
It seems to go through all the packages but it don't update any
I tried taking out the --freshen but to no avail.
Do I have to compile them first? If so, how do I do that?
I am lost on that one.

Also for the kernel.
I install a full system with GUI to see the differences.
I noticed that it will update the kernel and also the /etc/lilo.conf.
If you update manually the kernel, it doesn't update the /etc/lilo.conf

The only solution I found is to register a demo system, update it, then take the rpm from
that machine in /usr/spool/up2date and burn them on a cd.
I would prefer to get the updates from updates.redhat.com as it is easier to do.

Any better way will be appreciated

Thanks:

Thanks all,
Don't know why it's different now, but it's working
for me again. The strange thing is this is all
scripted, and I haven't messed with the scripts.
Hm . . .

I do have RHN subscriptions for a number of servers,
but that has never (to my knowledge) influenced access
to the updates ftp server. You are absolutely correct
about the access and bandwidth limitations when
attempting to connect to RHN for updating under a demo
account. I have seen this myself, and it did not
matter whether the rpms were being downloaded or
pulled off a CD or whatever. Traditionally, the
ftp updates site has been open for anyone anywhere.
After all, that is where we got updates before RHN existed.

Subject: [rhn-users] Updates server

I have, for several days, attempted unsuccessfully to
contact the RedHat updates server (ftp://updates.redhat.com).
It has been my practice to download the updates to a local
storage server, where I can access them via network, or
burn a CD, whatever. This conserves both my bandwidth
and RedHat's, and allows me to reasonably maintain servers
that don't have a broadband connection (some are as low
as a 33.6Kb modem).

I just completed another test where I went to my storage
server and attempted to contact updates.redhat.com via
ftp (no go), ping (nada), and then used command-line
up2date to initiate some needed updates.	Watching
/var/spool/up2date while the update was progressing,
I saw rpms being downloaded from RedHat, and I could
log into RHN from a browser, so I know that RHN is
not down. I also checked DNS and updates.redhat.com
is still there.

I searched RedHat's site for any announcement regarding
the updates server, to no avail.

Is the Redhat updates site temporarily down, or is it
another victim of a business plan change??	If temporary,

when should it be back on the air?	Do I need to look
for a mirror to supply these rpms?? What is happening
with this resource??

I dont know why you have problems, but it sure works.
By the way, if you have the "demo version" like myself, there is

limeted bandwitdh and from time ti time the server will not let you
in.
