On various "bare-bones" servers, I have good success opening a shell,
and as root typing "up2date --nox -u". This basically runs the up2date
program in your console, updating packages already installed.
For kernel updates: "up2date --nox -f kernel" (because kernel stuff is
normally placed on your list of things to be skipped).
