Dear Mike,

I sincerely appreciate your such a very prompt and helpful reply. I 
learnt several new things. I used your advice and did

rpm -qa | grep glibc

This indicated that every thing that I had rpm to install was there.

What do you think about the following explicit error message that was 
given by rpm twice

/sbin/ldconfig: /usr/lib/libnss_compat25.so is not a shared object (Type:2)

How can this file be made shared?  What harm is done if this in not made 
shared?

Once again, I greatly appreciate your help.
