In addition to the the things mentioned by others, you have
a subscription to RHN allowing you to log in as needed (or
automatically) and update a single machine, for 1 year.
During times of bandwidth congestion, people attempting to
use the "demo" or non-paid subscriptions (i.e. included with
some boxed sets) will be denied access in favor of those
with paid subscriptions. I have personally experienced this,
and have seen posts from others as well, so this is for real.
Also, unless you assign NO value to your time, the $60 fee
will be offset by a substantial savings in time, and a far
simpler procedure for assuring that all relevant packages
are kept up to date.
Oh yes, the subscription includes email notification of
update releases for packages installed on your machine,
if you wish.
Regarding kernel updates, I recommend formatting a separate
small partition (128MB or so), to be mounted on /boot. This
provides several benefits. I also never remove an older
kernel until I have verified that I can create a working boot
floppy with a newer one. Such a floppy would be required
should you ever need to rebuild your drive from backup tars.
Hope this helps.
