I'm not to sure about why it reboots but my RH8.0 wouldn't up2date either,
so I Run (up2date - -register) and all updating was resolved. Hope this
works for you, I'm a beginner as well and I did my searches via
www.google.com and
http://www.google.com/grphp?hl=en&tab=wg&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q= for help.

I'd check all the usual places for logs like /var/log/up2date,
/var/log/messages, etc.
If you're not updating, does the system operate as expected?
Likewise, have you attempted to just download the packages instead of
downloading and installing? From the command line do this as root:
# up2date -nox -download
Unless you've specified another download directory the files should be
downloaded to /var/spool/up2date.
