Usually there are 2 areas that need space, /var/spool/up2date for
downloading the packages, and the temporary area that rpm uses during the
upgrade/installation process, which I believe is /tmp (someone correct me
if I'm wrong :).

Ok, so your '/' filesystem probably is what has /tmp, and needs more
space.
> [root alpha up2date]# df -h
> Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
> /dev/sda3 372M 308M 45M 88% /
45 megs is not alot. That's probably your problem.
