I faced a similar problem when I logged in as user, but not as "root".
I'd re-installed Red Hat Linux 8.0, after formatting all but the /home
partition since I wanted to preserve the data on it. But, while adding users
during re-installation, I inadvertently changed the order of the users from
the original. I added myself (Aloysius) as the first user (500), and my
company (Summit) as the second user (501). Originally Summit was the first
user (500).
When I got the "permission denied" message, I found that Summit owned all
the files in my (Aloysius) user account and I (Aloysius) was the owner of
all the files in the Summit account. No wonder permission was denied.
In case you've done something similar, try re-setting the group IDs. I hope
that works.
