Duane,
Obviously there could be several causes to your problem 
but read your hardware description  and then caught the
following on balug (Bay Area Linux Users Group) mail list.
Thought it might give you something else to consider:

I think this is the general consensus. I personally won't buy anythingfrom
IBM after having occur dataloss occur from defective IBM products.
The one thing IBM did was make me extremly paranoid about my personal data.

Had it working at one point.  Decided to reinstall after 3rd party program failed.  
Now, sometimes it locks on format(not always the same directory), 
and sometimes on package install(not always on the same package),
but in no case will it complete the install.  
Am using a boxed, purchased version of 9.
