Re: [rhn-users] Wine RH9

Hi Naresh

I put some effort into trying to get wine working, much as you describe, and with the same unsatisfactory results. I also tried VMWare and was appalled at how clunky and system resource hungry it was. I eventually went for a hardware solution to the problem and created a "twin" system, one running Linux, the other running Windows, both operating through an electronic KVM switch to the same keyboard, monitor (video) and mouse, and networked the two. So I can switch from Linux to Windows with a double dab of the control key. Its a much more expensive solution, but it works perfectly and lets you simultaneously view the same file in both systems (nice when doing web design for example as you can see your design across a full variety of browsers).

The alternative to wine used to be Wabi. It would run a limited range of Windows 3.1x apps including Microsoft Office 6.0. Wabi was, in my experience, quite stable and very fast. There was a version that supported 24bit colour and I used it extensively to run my word processor of choice - WordPerfect 6.1, with great success. I still have my copy but don't use it any more, as I now have Open Office (and WordPerfect 8 for Linux - Commercial version).

Anyway, I suggest that you either make the transition to Open Office, or set up a "twin" system. Computer hardware prices have really crashed recently (here in Hong Kong they're unblievable) so setting up a new (or second hand) twin system to run your Windows apps would prove to be a "known to work" and very user friendly option.
