On a one time basis, set a new path - PATH=$PATH:/newdir/subdir 
To see it - echo $PATH

Otherwise, if you want it to stick, edit the path statement in your .bash_profile. 

And in the meantime, start reading your Documentation disk. O'Reilly has some
great books for all speeds.
