It works immediately without problems (gcc 2.95).

RPM is really awfully bad in error messages, even the file name is not
reported. I had to run it with trace to find out where was this f... file.
--buildroot=/var/tmp
and/or:
%buildroot /var/tmp/$RPM_PACKAGE_NAME
%buildroot /var/tmp/%{name}
may help.

"Maximum RPM" is quite out-of-date and RPM documentation is not clear. Check doc/manual/macros.
