In my case, I ended up doing exactly what I was considering above: namely I
reinstalled the RPMs on top of themselves. However, this doesn't address your
issue because I was explicitly *not* doing the kernel.
In the past, I've had issues with making sure LILO configured things properly.
I assume you've gone over your lilo.conf with a fine toothed comb and have a
valid initrd and all that?
