Well, that's not the case for subpackages - it's possible to have
different version and release strings for subpackages, why not for main
package?

Not really, rpm -qi tells the name of the source package and tools like
rpm2html know how to give links to correct source packages.

Not really - if I want to be able to build different binary packages from
a single source package, why not give these binary packages different
subrelease numbers?
