Why aren't you upgrading to rpm-4.0.3-7x?
What's in /var/lib/rpm? If you're still using db1 (i.e. you have
/var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm), then you should try to convert before
upgrading, as the upgrade will be simpler.
AFAICG (you haven't specified "blah blah" :-( there are other packages
that depend on rpm, such as gnorpm, kpackage, rpmfind, etc. Yes you
will need to upgrade those packages as well. The 7.2 versions will
"work", but you will need to upgrade all the other packages needed
by the packages that link to rpmlib as well, can't be helped.
Your easiest upgrade pathway IMHO is gonna be
1) Deinstall gnorpm, kpackage, and whatever else links
to rpmlib using rpm --erase.
2) Upgrade rpm. You will need the glibc errata.
3) Reinstall the packages from Red Hat 7.2 removed in 1). Be prepared,
there will be other packages that will need to be upgraded as well.
