On the subject of recovering from a broken rpm/db3 installation, the
ideal answer would be a flag to rpm that stops it trying to link with
db3 or do anything to the package database. For example,
% rpm -Uvh --no-database db3-*.rpm rpm-*.rpm
This would just install the files without using the existing broken
database. Of course this option would be used in emergencies only. You
could then go on to do a --rebuilddb or --initdb and install packages
normally.
