Re: Building RPM 3.x RPMs

Circa 2001-Jul-02 14:55:52 -0400 dixit John Aldrich:

: Is there any way to build an RPM that's compatible with RedHat 6.x
: version of RPM using RPM 4.x? The reason I ask is that I package a
: couple small apps and one of the developers has asked if there is
: any way I can create an RPM that's compatible with RPM 3.x.

The single best way to do that is to build the RPM package on an actual
Red Hat Linux 6.2 system using rpm-3.0.5 or rpm-3.0.6.

It's also possible to build in a chroot-ed area that has a complete Red
Hat Linux 6.2 system installed, along with rpm-3.0.5 or 3.0.6.

It's possible to build rpm-3.0.x-compatible packages (where x <= 6) using
rpm-4.0.x with '--nodirtokens', but you must remember that building on
anything but a Red Hat Linux 6.2 system is likely to produce packages
that are not suitable for a RHL-6.2 target system.
