I've used it with betas, because the normal lexical comparison of
version and release number makes a beta or release candidate seem later
than the release. For instance, a beta for version 3 might be 3.0b1,
which looks like a version that follows 3. I give this an epoch
constructed from the prior release (eg. 200 for version 2.00) and
update the epoch (eg. to 300) when the beta finally goes gold.
