gzip package freezing OS

   Is there any issues with having a gziped package over 2G on Redhat 7.1?
When I create this package it freezes anything that happens in that 
filesystem. The process can not be kill " not evan -9" The system has to be 
re-booted to correct the problem.  


tar -czvf /bkup/package /poblic

After doing this the /bkup dir is hosed all commands freeze??

the dir is setup with raid 1
