Re: HELP rpm 4.0

Before I ask I will say it: "I am dumb, and should be beaten" :-)

Being unaware of "the warning" I attempted to upgrade to rpm4.0 from 3.x.It
seemed a reasonable step when I could not install packages with version
numbers >= 3.x.

I now find myself in a pickle with either a corrupted or (I hope)
temporarily inaccessible RPM database.

Any suggestions as to steps to take to roll back this "upgrade" are
appreciated. Info follows...

My distro is Mandrake 7.1. I was using the rpm which came with the distro.

I obtained rpm-4.0-___-i386.rpm from rpm.redhat.com. Did a test on the
package file... no complaints about dependencies. So I installed with the
"upgrade" option.

The only message I received then was "could not delete /usr/lib/rpm --
directory not empty". There were no complaints of dependency problems, etc.

Since Then...

"rpm -qa" produces no output.

"rpm -q rpm", or any package that was/is on my system produces "package rpm
is not installed"

urmpi and its GUI front ends will not run -- "can't find ld.s0.____".

"rpm --rebuild" has had no effect.

Attempts to "downgrade" rpm from my Mandrake Install CD have failed, because
rpm believes "ld.so____" packages, etc., are not installed on my system. (I
have been trying to avoid "--nodep" and force.

It sounds like what I really need to do is to use RPM 3.0.5. So... how get
there with a restored database?

Thanks!!!

Brian

p.s. I am willing to wear burlap and sit in ashes if need be... but measures
like reinstalling the distro would just make my Windows friends too happy.
Don't wanna do that. ;-)
