The build modes of rpm moved from /bin/rpm to a /usr/lib/rpm/rpmb helper
binary over a year ago.
What's left is legacy compatibility provided by something called popt
aliases. The aliases are used to re-exec a helper binary if a mode
specific option is encountered. This mostly works, certainly well enough
for legacy compatibility IMHO, but there are problems with various
pathological invocations.
