RPM upgrade

I have RPM 3.0.4 installed and running. When I try to upgrade my RPM version
(i.e.: rpm -Uvh rpm-4.0.2-7x.i386.rpm) I have this message

only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM

I read that this is because the package I am trying to install has a diferent
format, my question is how can I install a new rpm which hold that new format?
