Don't forget rhmask, and arbitrarily complex fubarage of parts
-- dd and md5sum and MAC addresses, and so forth.
Real protection probably requires public key encryption and a
monotonically increasing 'seconds since epoch' and external
connectivity to support the challenge/response layer.
I've sold a product for the last 15 years (Alloy, OS/2, DOS,
Novell, WinX) which uses variants of such methods, and the
price to complexity tradeoff is such that I've not had much
theft.
