Use of %{__*} macros

Take for example: %{__make} and %{__sed}

I'd like to use them to write better spec files.

But I'm concerned about the double-underbar characters.

Are the macros prefaced with two underbar characters for namespace
management reasons, or because they are supposed to be "private"?
