Thank you, your advice worked!

I switched URL: and Source: and everything was happy.
I also noticed that URL: is optional and that Requires: accepts
both <prog>-<version> and <prog> = <version> formats.

I'll take a closer look at rpm.spec

Yes, I'm really, really sure.
I even retried it after reading your email.
rpm-3.0 must be more forgiving (or broken).

Anyway.....
