You didn't say what version you have, but I faced
what may have been a similar problem: to get a
RH6.2 system, loaded from the original distribution,
w/no patches applied, brought to a fully patched
state. I did the following:
(1) Log in to RedHat Network. If you don't have a
membership, I recommend signing up.
(2) Click on the item "Help Desk" on the left side.
(3) Click on the item "RHN and RH Linux 6.2"
(4) A document is displayed that gives a list of RPMs to
download, and the order in which to install them to bring
RH 6.2 up to the point where it can log in to RHN and
get any further updates that are appropriate and desired.
The rpm list shows about a dozen packages, including
db3-3xxx and rpm-4.0.2xxx. You can use this procedure
whether on not you choose later to register a system on
RHN for updating.
Maybe this isn't a purist's way, but it worked well for me.
